Denali National Park and Preserve is a vacation dream come true. The Alaskan wilderness has long been a popular vacation destination for travelers from every corner of the world. Denali offers something for everyone, from nature-lovers to thrill-seekers to laid back tourists.
Here are just a few of the things that you can do at Denali!
Jet Boat excursion: travel in a heated, covered jet boat along a stretch of white water rapids that border Denali National Park. The jet boats have lots of observation windows so you can look for wildlife and take plenty of pictures.
A helicopter “flightseeing” tour offers an opportunity to see areas of Denali accessible only by air. Enjoy a birds-eye view of the stunning Cantwell Glacier, a virtual ice waterfall cascading 900 feet to the valley below. Examine the dramatic geological features of the Polychrome Mountains and soar along the imposing Alaska Range.
Tour the husky homestead of Iditarod champion Jeff King, or take a Tundra Trail horseback ride.
Rafting excursions include both scenic floats and action-packed whitewater adventures on the Nenana River. With magnificent views and wildlife sightings, these tours are perfect for first-time rafters as well as whitewater veterans.
Want something a little more laidback? Take a relaxing covered wagon ride pulled by two beautiful, friendly draft horses. Fun for the whole family, this wilderness ride begins with an 11-mile trip by van through the Nenana River canyon to Otto Lake, then a photographic adventure along Denali Park’s north boundary. Learn about the area’s history and local folklore, too.
Denali Lake Fishing: beginners and experienced anglers alike can enjoy private lake fishing for Arctic Grayling and Rainbow Trout. The catch-and-release excursions include all fishing gear, license, and instruction.
Dinner Theater: experience an spirited Gold Rush tale with ALASKA CABIN NITE, a mix of storytelling, music and humor performed in an authentic, log-paneled roadhouse at the McKinley Chalet Resort. Or, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge offers a high-energy musical comedy that will have you clapping and singing along. Both Dinner Theaters serve a family-style meal of barbecued ribs, Alaska salmon and all the fixings before the show.
Golfing Excursion: watch for wildlife on a panoramic 9-hole course with picturesque views of the lake and the midnight sun. After golfing, you can walk the trail to the historic Diamond Strip Mine.
Hiking: Not ready to scale Mt. McKinley? Don’t worry, Denali has plenty of opportunities to flex your leg muscles other than climbing North America’s tallest peak (all 20,320 feet!). There are easy guided nature walks near the visitor center, short hiking trails, moderate backcountry treks, and strenuous adventures for experienced hikers. One popular choice is the Mt. Healy Overlook Trail, a 2.5-mile hike up Mt. Healy offering magnificent views of the Nenana Valley. If you have children, be sure to see the slide shows and interpretive programs at the visitor center.
Whichever activity you choose while at Denali, you will experience stunning views and the unequaled thrill of being in the Alaskan wilderness.
