Michigan travel is all about adventure, the outdoors, and history. Located in the Midwestern United States, Michigan is surrounded by the Great Lakes and features beautiful scenery as well as bustling big cities. Michigan travel is for anyone who loves nature, being active, and exploring everything this great state has to offer.
The most well-known city in Michigan is Detroit. Here you’ll find a busy metropolis with wonderful dining, hotels, shopping, professional sports, theatre, and more. Detroit’s four major sports teams are the Red Wings (NHL hockey), the Tigers (MLB baseball), the Lions (NFL football), and the Pistons (NBA basketball). The capital city of Lansing is home to the State Capital building, as well as many other government and historical sights.
Perhaps the most alluring natural resources available to the state of Michigan are the numerous surrounding lakes. Flanked by Lake Erie, Lake Michigan, Lake Superior, and Lake Huron, Michigan offers many water sports and water-based activities for active people. From swimming and boating to ice skating and ice fishing, there are things to do on the water all year round.
Summer time offers many beaches, as Michigan boasts the second-highest number of coastline miles in the country (after Alaska). While the weather isn’t exactly tropical, it’s still warm enough to enjoy a bit of sun and sand. In the winter, there are terrific cross-country ski trails as well as several downhill ski runs. Cottages are available for both winter and summer rentals, and there are many ski resorts to check out as well.
The food in Michigan ranges from luxurious haute cuisine to sidewalk stands selling wonderful-smelling fare to passersby. Michigan is famous for its fudge, but there are many other local tastes to sample, including tart cherries, local fish, and savory pastries filled with meat and seasonings.
Hotels abound, and you can find lodgings to suit every budget and taste. Whether you want to stay in the busy city of Detroit or the quieter northern regions, there is no shortage of hotels, resorts, and bed and breakfasts available for booking.
You can hop on a ferry and travel to Mackinac Island, where an historical fort and working lumber mill are both open for tourists to visit. Also make sure to visit the town of Frankenmuth, which is modeled after an authentic old German town. The food there is excellent!
No matter what you’re looking for in a vacation, you’ll likely find it in Michigan. From fabulous food to exhilarating active sports, Michigan is an inviting and exciting destination.
