A Florida vacation brings to mind sandy beaches and theme parks, but there is lots more to see and do in the Sunshine State. Relax in the Florida Keys, shop at the finest designer boutiques, try out the wide variety of water sports, or experience history and art museums – this is just a small sampling of what Florida has to offer. Whether you’re traveling as a family or group, alone, with friends, or on a romantic getaway, there is lots to see and do on a Florida vacation even without visiting Disney World!
The Cocoa Beach area of Florida has been nicknamed “The Space Coast” because this is where you’ll find the Kennedy Space Center. Here you can try out the space flight simulator, or catch a show at the Imax theater. If you’re a fan of kayaking, check out the Brevard Zoo where visitors can explore the wildlife while navigating in a kayak. Of course you’ll find some great beaches here as well, with a variety of water sports available.
Daytona Beach is the home of the famous car races, but there are many other attractions here as well. The Ponce de Leon Lighthouse is open to visitors, but you’ll have to climb up over 200 steps to get inside! The Marine Science Center combines entertainment with learning, and you can even take a ghost tour of the most haunted spots in the area. For a fun meal, try the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company.
Florida’s capital city, Tallahassee, offers a myriad of museums like The Tallahassee Museum. Here you can discover Big Bend Farm, visit the butterfly sanctuary, and check out the railroad station. The Museum of Florida History boasts everything from dinosaur skeletons to antique furniture. You can spend several days visiting the numerous art and horticultural museums and gardens here as well.
Of course there are the famous attractions that most Florida vacationers seek out. Disney World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios, and Busch Gardens are all thriving tourist areas. Fort Lauderdale has always been a popular destination for the young and young at heart, especially during Spring Break. If you’re a savvy shopper, you’ll find some great designer outlet malls in South Florida and in Miami especially.
Florida is one of those places that people love to visit again and again, because of the terrific weather and wide assortment of places to go. The beaches are lovely and the theme parks offer thrills and excitement, but don’t limit yourself to those alone. Explore the state and make your Florida vacation truly memorable!
