A family vacation is a wonderful way to relax with your loved ones and enjoy a change of scenery and pace. As with any type of travel, planning is the key to a successful and memorable family vacation. With some careful thought and foresight, your family vacation will be one that you’ll talk about for years to come.

The first thing you need to decide for your family vacation is what type of travel you’ll be doing. Air travel is quite different from renting a travel trailer or taking a train. If you have very young children, family members with disabilities, seniors, or family members requiring medical care, you may be limited in the types of travel you can do. Finances can also dictate your method of traveling. Also consider how much time you have to take your vacation. Train travel will be slower than flying, for example.

Once you’ve decided how you’ll travel, it’s time to pick a destination for your family vacation. If you’ve decided to fly, the world is wide open to you. You can choose between a ski vacation, a sandy beach resort, or a wonderfully rich cultural city halfway across the globe. Consider the ages and interests of each family member, and try to find a destination that offers something everyone will enjoy.

Train travel is more limited, but you can still discover new and exciting places, or catch up on your history with tours and historical landmarks. Renting a car, trailer, or camper and taking a road trip is another great option, and your destinations are only limited to the amount of time you have to explore.

If you’re thinking of taking your family vacation somewhere exotic, make sure that there are restaurants or hotel room service available in case one or more children don’t care for the local cuisine. Also check on the conditions of the drinking water, and stock up on the bottled variety if necessary.

Before you leave for your family vacation, research the location where you’ll be staying and find out the location and telephone numbers of the nearest hospital, emergency services, and the travel agency or airline you’ve booked your vacation through. It’s always best to be prepared for anything, especially when traveling with children.

Take along some books, puzzles, and small games for kids to entertain themselves with, and ask at your children’s school to see if their teachers want to send along some light homework to keep them busy and prevent them from getting too far behind in school while they’re away.

Last but not least, make sure that your camera is working well and that you’ve stocked up on batteries and film. You won’t want to miss any photo opportunities while on your family vacation!

Make sure your next family vacation is one that will create memories for your whole family to cherish. It just takes a little planning to have a whole lot of fun!
