A European vacation offers everything from sunny, sandy beaches to alpine skiing in the Alps. Gourmet food, historic sites, romantic getaways, and the world’s finest artwork and architecture are only a few of the highlights of a European vacation. Traveling through Europe doesn’t have to cost a fortune either; there are many ways to save money and still get the most out of your European vacation.

Maybe you’ve dreamed of gliding through the canals of Venice, or visiting the Louvre in Paris. Perhaps you’ve always wanted to see Austria and explore the rich musical history there. From the lively festivities of Germany’s Oktoberfest to the serene beauty of the Romanian countryside, Europe offers a dizzying array of rich and rewarding experiences.

Historic hotels are abundant, and even if you’re traveling on a budget, it’s worth a little splurge to experience one night in lavish luxury. While many things may seem expensive, there are also lots of ways to counter these expenses and save quite a bit of cash. For example, renting a car that uses diesel fuel will not only save you money at the pump, but this type of gas is much more widely available.

Traveling by train is very common in Europe, and the Eurail system covers almost the entire continent. Pick up a “Flexipass” to have unlimited access to every country, and explore on your own itinerary. Or choose a packaged tour from any number of reputable agencies or tour companies, and experience a guided tour that’s put together for you.

Gourmet dining is one of the highlights of a European vacation, but you likely won’t want to spend each and every meal at a fancy restaurant! Check out the local markets for fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and cheeses. Fresh bread is inexpensive and delicious, and you’ll be able to find good wines and rich coffees at very reasonable prices. Cafes and restaurants often feature complete meals at a set price, and these include everything from soup and salad to the main course to dessert, wine, and coffee or tea. Prices are usually very reasonable, and taxes and service fees are also included. Make sure you try the local specialties wherever you travel, as these dishes display the heart and soul of each community.

European vacations can be as unique and individual as the people experiencing them. It’s almost mind-boggling to consider the possibilities! With so much to see and do, the most difficult part of your vacation planning will be deciding where to go first!
