Budget travel is the only way to go when you’re interested in saving money on your travel plans. As prices rise across the board, budget-minded travelers are getting more creative in finding deals and traveling cheaply. Here are a few tips to help you in making your budget travel plans.
Destination
Your destination will play a big part in how your budget will look for your trip. Exotic locales and far away countries will obviously cost more than a road trip to a theme park or beach. Consider staying in your home country, or remaining on the continent for your vacation. Domestic flights are always cheaper than international fares, and you won’t have to worry about exchange rates or spending money on extra travel documents or vaccinations either.
Mode of Travel
Cruises, flights, and train fares all offer a wide range of pricing for budget travelers. If you can reach your destination using more than one method of travel, you can save money by comparing the available rates for each one. Sometimes it’s less expensive to take a train, for example.
Air Fare
There are many ways to purchase air fares on a budget. Booking well in advance will save you a lot of money, as fares increase as the departure date gets closer. No frills airlines are becoming increasingly popular, allowing you to use the basic services and not have to pay for extras that you may or may not use.
Compare prices on every available airline, using bargain travel websites designed to find the best fares to save you time. Switch up your departure and arrival dates by a few days to see if the fares go down. Generally speaking, midweek prices will be less than weekend rates.
Hotels
Most budget hotels are clean, efficient, and safe. Choose a popular, well known brand name hotel, and book your rooms as far in advance as you can. Ask for available discounts when booking, and see if they offer reduced rates for any clubs or organizations you might belong to, such as the AAA.
Avoid using room service and the telephone if you can. Picking up snacks and drinks at a local grocery store will cost much less, and prepaid phone cards used at a telephone booth will ensure that you have fewer out-of-pocket expenses at your destination.
Consider alternatives to a hotel stay. Bed and breakfasts can be less expensive, depending on your destination. There are hostels, vacation rentals, trailer parks, and campgrounds to choose from too!
Dining and Sightseeing
Check with your hotel and/or tour operator to see if there are any coupons available for local restaurants, theme parks, and sights. Some will even offer shopping discounts for local stores. For breakfast, pick up pastries, fresh fruit, and juice at a market or grocery store and eat in your hotel room before heading out for the day. It’s much cheaper than ordering breakfast out.
Instead of dining at big-name, fancy restaurants, try the smaller places that are family-owned. The food will likely be much better, and less expensive too! Spend one or two days visiting theme parks or other places that tend to be costly, and then spend the rest of your time at museums, on hiking trips, at public parks, or even sunning and swimming on the beach. These activities are cheap or free, and are often just as much fun as those you’ll pay for.
Budget travel makes it possible for anyone to take an enjoyable vacation, regardless of how big your bank account may be!
