7 Great Hawaii Bicycle Tours

With your tour guide,
Anne P. Mitchell

Summary:   Some of the most spectacular Hawaii vacations are those which include bicycle tours of Hawaii. Here are seven great bike tours to enhance your Hawaii vacations!

An ideal way to discover all the natural wonders Hawaii offers is to explore by bike. You see much more than traveling by car, bus or walking. You need not be a gung-ho athlete, because there are roads and tours available for every ability.

Here are just a few island expeditions to whet your cycling appetite.

Molokai: The Lodge at Molokai Ranch offers some of the best (if not the best) mountain biking in Hawaii. Imagine 53,000 spectacular acres with inter-crossing trails that weave up and down to the beach. The guides are very knowledgeable, and tours range from 2 hours to full-day.

Java aficionados should take Molokai Rentals’ ride through 500 acres of coffee fields. With numerous ups and downs, the 2½-hour tour ventures up to an overlook and back for a coffee taste-testing and walking tour of the plant. Daring bikers can try the day-long guided tours which explore either the Forest Reserve or places off-the-beaten-track.

The Big Island: From Kailua-Kona, pedal to a reconstructed Hawaiian village called the “Place of Refuge.” After a gradual 4,000-foot climb to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, cycle around the rim of the crater and visit the intriguing Thurston Lava Tube. Park your bike and walk with a local volcanologist, who can tell you all about one of the world’s most active volcanoes.

Or take the Kohala Mountain Lookout to Keokea Beach bike tour! This moderate road tour is a 20-mile rolling route that travels from a scenic lookout to Kapa`au (3,000 feet of descent). Learn about the legacy of King Kamehameha, then enjoy a heart-pumping ride through gorgeous tropical vegetation. The tour finishes with a fun downhill cruise to Keokea Bay. Note: this ride can be quite windy, and is unsuitable for inexperienced bikers.

On Oahu, Peacock Flats is an area of public land with exceptionally beautiful views and lots of native flora and fauna on varied singletrack and jeep roads. Scenery-wise, this ride is hard to beat; however, with numerous trails there’s a good chance of getting lost, so go with a tour. Some areas are also off-limit to mountain biking. If you go up the paved path, be prepared for a strenuous climb to the top. Real peacocks abound here (hence the name), and may startle you along your ride.

Or try the Downhill Bike and Waterfall Hike. This beginner-perfect excursion provides a tropical mountain perspective of Oahu from 1800′ above. Coast five miles downhill on a paved mountain road with scenic views of Honolulu, Waikiki and Manoa Valley. Then take a two-mile hike to a 200′ cascading waterfall that’s so amazing it will leave you breathless.

Want to check out Maui? National Park is where you’ll find the world’s largest dormant volcano and Maui’s main natural attraction. A spectacular sunrise tour starts with a shuttle to the summit (10,023 ft.) - just ascending Haleakala mountain is a thrilling experience! At the top, you can peer down into the 3,000-foot deep crater, said to be large enough to hold the city of Manhattan. The cycling part of this enjoyable adventure involves a 38-mile downhill coast.

Whichever Hawaii bicycle tours you choose, you are sure to have the time of your life, creating memories you’ll treasure forever.
